Joint Crime Training 04/01/99

PHONE: 961-2350
APRIL 1, 1999

The Hawaii County Police Department is offering a joint training course to help police officers and citizens work together to address the issues of crime and disorder in their communities.

A class on “Developing Community-Police Teams” will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 21-23, 1999, in the Kahaluu Room III at the Aston Keauhou Beach Resort, 78-6740 Alii Drive, in Keauhou, North Kona.

Training citizens and police officers together in the same classroom is a new and unique strategy that has proven effective in building healthy community relationships for sharing resources and solving problems.

Developed and delivered by the Western Community Policing Center, the joint class builds community action teams by providing the trainees with basic community policing information, skills and strategies; with a forum for discussion; and with a process for planning.

Reactions from people who complete the course are consistently strong and positive: Police officers and citizens overwhelmingly agree that the training increases their confidence in each other and their combined ability to make changes in their communities.

Participants must register and attend as teams of four to 10 people with a diverse representation of community and law enforcement. Since space is limited to 60 persons, advance registration is requested. There is no registration fee for the training.

For more information and registration, call Sergeant James Sanborn, head of the Community Policing Program, at 961-2350.
