Media Release

A 25-year-old Hilo man died Sunday (July 29) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on July 23 on South Point Road approximately 5.5 miles south of Kamāʻoa Road.

Responding on July 23 to an 8:47 a.m. call, Kaʻū patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2001 Mercury sedan and traveling north on South Point Road when he ran off the right side of the road, lost control, struck a utility pole and overturned several times.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

He was taken by helicopter to Kona Community Hospital and died on July 29 at 9:25 a.m.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were factors but speed may have been a factor in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask that anyone with information about this traffic crash call Officer Larry Flowers at 326-4646, extension 229.

This is the 21st traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 15 at this time last year.
