A 19 year old Ka’u man was killed Friday night (December 12, 2001) after being involved in a single vehicle traffic accident on Route 11, .5 miles west of the 55 mile-marker in Punaluu area of the Ka’u District.

Responding to a 8:15 p.m. call, Ka’u Police determined that the driver, Mitchell M. Medeiros, of a Pahala address, was traveling west on Route 11, when he ran off the right side of the road, striking the embankment and overturned. Medeiros was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, which was a 1997 Dodge Neon, 4 door sedan.

The driver was transported by Fire Rescue personnel to the Ka’u Hospital where was pronounced dead at 9:41 p.m.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers will be continuing their investigation and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 29th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 37 at the same time last year.
