At 7:55 a.m. Wednesday (January 16) Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a domestic argument involving a weapon on Ipuaiwaha Street in the Keaau Ag Lots subdivision.

Officers assisted a 28-year-old woman in leaving the home and observed a man with an assault rifle. As a precaution, police evacuated residents from nearby homes.

Officers were able to negotiate with the suspect and he surrendered without incident an hour later.

Police arrested 29-year-old Van Uemura of Keaau Ag Lots for abuse of a family/household member. He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock without charges pending further investigation.
