Hawaii Police Chief Lawrence K. Mahuna has promoted Major Henry Tavares to assistant chief, effective January 16.

Until his promotion, Tavares was major in charge of the Technical Services Division in the Police Department’s Administrative Bureau. He will now oversee police operations in West Hawaii.

Tavares, a graduate of the FBI National Academy, joined the Hawaii Police Department in 1984. His previous assignments include lieutenant in Vice and captain of Internal Affairs and the Criminal Intelligence Unit.

Mahuna transferred Assistant Chief Derek Pacheco from West Hawaii to East Hawaii to fill a vacancy left when Assistant Chief James Day retired at the end of December. Pacheco is now in charge of East Hawaii operations.
