MEDIA RELEASE

Police have arrested and charged a Kona man with robbery and theft after he allegedly robbed a German tourist early Thursday (July 1, 1999).

Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives Sunday charged Clarence K. Hatori, 21, of Kailua-Kona, with second-degree robbery, a Class B felony, and fourth-degree theft, a petty misdemeanor.

The victim told police that he had met a local male in a Kailua-Kona nightclub. He said the two went barhopping together. The victim said he was taking the suspect home to an apartment complex on Walua Road, but when he stopped the car on the side of the road to let him out, the suspect made a threatening gesture as if to punch him and demanded his wristwatch and cash.

Friday night, the victim spotted the suspect in another Kailua-Kona nightclub and identified him to police officers.

Kona patrol officers arrested the suspect on a contempt of court warrant shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday. After taking him to the station, they arrested him on suspicion of robbery and theft. On Sunday, he was formally charged by CIS detectives.

Hatori is being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of a total bail of $2,350.
