MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are asking the public for help in curtailing a growing problem with persons defacing public and private property, otherwise known as graffiti, in Hilo.

Officers are reminding the public that damaging public or private property is a crime and that all incidents and persons involved should be reported to the police.

They are also encouraging parents to be aware of any indications that their children may be responsible for writing or drawing graffiti. Children may be participating in graffiti if they are acquiring more than the usual amount of pens, markers and paints or if they are hanging out with persons who may be damaging property with graffiti.

Anyone witnessing an act of graffiti is urged to call the police at 935-3311. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. Information given to Crime Stoppers is kept strictly confidential.
