JULY 5, 2004

A 27-year-old male passenger died Monday (July 5, 2004) of injuries he suffered in a one-vehicle crash on Hiona Street in Holualoa, North Kona.

The victim was identified as Jared Kauila Medeiros, of a Kailua-Kona address.

Responding to a 1:09 a.m. call Monday, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was a passenger in the back seat behind driver Teddy Miller, 29, also of Kailua-Kona, when the 1991 Chevy Blazer ran off the end of the roadway and into a private pasture. The vehicle overturned, ejecting the victim.

The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver and two other occjupants, identified as Geraldine Kahele, 39, of Kailua-Kona, who was the front-seat passenger, and James Felder, 33, of Holualoa, were also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

Police have not determined if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of Medeiros’ death. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are conducting a negligent homicide investigation into the crash, and anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Officer Bradley Freitas of the TEU at 961-2332.

Monday’s death was the 24th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 15 at the same time last year.
