MEDIA RELEASE

Police Traffic investigators have identified a female passenger who died Tuesday (March 27) in a one-car traffic crash on Mauna Kea Access Road above the Mauna Kea Visitors Center.

The victim is identified as 33-year-old Yuko Aizawa of Osaki-Shi, Japan.

Responding to a 2:26 p.m. call Tuesday, South Hilo Patrol Officers determined that Aizawa was a back-seat passenger in a red 2006 Jeep multi-purpose vehicle that was traveling down Mauna Kea Access Road when the driver lost control, ran off the road and down an embankment, and overturned. Aizawa was ejected from the vehicle.

Another victim was previously identified at Philip Patrick Y.M. Lung, 34, of Honolulu.

Tuesday’s deaths were the 11th and 12th traffic fatalities on the Big Island this year compared with 11 at this time last year.
