Missing hiker found 08-11-06

An 57-year-old Illinois hiker reported missing Thursday afternoon in West Hawaii (August 10, 2006) was found safe early Friday (August 11, 2006).

Phillip Michael Thomas of Darien, Illinois, was reported missing after he hiked down the Kaawaloa trail off the top of Napoopoo Road at 12:20 p.m. and failed to return at 1 p.m. as planned.

Police and Fire Department personnel searched the trail and surrounding area Thursday until 9:45 p.m. but were unable to located Thomas.

The search was resumed at 5:37 a.m. Friday. With the help of a Fire Department helicopter, the hiker was found in good condition at 6:33 a.m.
