MEDIA RELEASE

A 63-year-old North Kohala man died Friday (April 7, 2006) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle traffic crash on Akoni Pule Highway, .5 miles north of the 14 Mile-Marker in North Kohala.

Responding to a 10:42 p.m. call, North Kohala patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 1991 Honda two-door sedan and traveling north on Akoni Pule Highway when the driver drove off the right side of the road and dropped about 15 feet down into a gulch.

The victim was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in this crash. The victim was not wearing a seatbelt.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 13th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 11 at the same time last year.
