MEDIA RELEASE

On Sunday, January 23, 2000, at about 9:15 p.m., a Hawaii County Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit officer in pursuit of a motor vehicle was shot at several times by an occupant in the pursued vehicle. The pursuit began as a result of traffic violations observed. The officer did not sustain any injuries.

An attempted murder investigation has been initiated and is being continued by the Kona Criminal Investigation Section.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Detectiver Guy Kaniho of the Kona Criminal Investigation Section at 326-4204.

Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.00 if their call leads to an arrest or indictment.
