During the week of January 17-23, 2000, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 87 DUI arrests, a 34 percent increase over the 65 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 42 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 156, compared to 115 during the same period last year, an increase of 36 percent.
There have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none during the same period last year.
Both of the traffic fatalities were alcohol-related.
