MEDIA RELEASE

A 44-year-old Pahoa man was shot and wounded Friday morning (January 17, 2003) after an altercation at his residence.

The victim was identified as Calvin L. Kobayashi, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center and later flown to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.

His assailant, a 41-year-old male, is being held in the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation by Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives.

Responding to an 11:30 a.m. call, police determined that Kobayashi had been repairing the suspect’s boat. When the suspect came by to retrieve the boat, the two got into an argument.

The suspect then got a handgun, shot at Kobayashi several times, wounding him in the side, and then drove off.

About 10 minutes after the shooting, the assailant called police, told them where he was and later surrendered without incident.
