Police crack down on illegal road racing 05-19-03

In a crackdown on illegal road racing, Puna and Hilo police officers arrested 15 persons Friday (May 16, 2003) during an enforcement operation in Puna.

Assisted by officers from the Traffic Enforcement Unit, Juvenile Aid Section and Hilo Vice Section, officers from the Puna and Hilo Patrol made the arrests in the Red Road area.

The operation resulted in the issuing of 56 vehicle citations, 15 arrests and the apprehension of a runaway. It also resulted in six charges of illegal road racing, and the initiation of five felony drug cases and one misdemeanor drug case.

Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said operations against illegal road racing will continue along Red Road and in all other areas of the Big Island where racing is a problem.
