Bush fire burns 550 acres in Waikoloa 05-18-03

Firefighters battled a brush fire Sunday (May 8, 2003) in the Waikoloa area of South Kohala.

There were no reported injuries in the fire, and firefighters had contained the blaze by 4:30 p.m..

Responding to a 10:29 a.m. report of a brush fire, firefighters determined that the fire, of unknown origin, had started below the Waikoloa Elementary School. The blaze burned a total of 550 acres before they contained the flames.

One structure was reported damaged by the fire, but the value of the damage was unknown.

Fire personnel will be monitoring fire through the night, officials said.
