MEDIA RELEASE

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying assailants who stabbed a 17-year-old Puna youth several times during a fight at a large party held at a Hawaiian Paradise Park residence last Saturday (August 9, 2003).

Responding to a report of a “possible stabbing victim” who had run to a residence on 27th Avenue, Puna patrol officers found the victim with several stab wounds and a large hunting knife still embedded in his left forearm. The officers determined that the victim had been stabbed at about 11 p.m. during a large fight at a birthday party gathering held at a 27th Avenue residence. Several males had chased the victim to a neighboring house, where they continued to make taunts at the occupants before leaving the area.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center and later flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he underwent surgery and later was reported in serious condition.

East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives have initiated an attempted murder investigation.

Anyone with information with information about the stabbing, the fight or the identity of the assailants is asked to call Detective Richard Sherlock of the East Hawaii CIS at 961-2379 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
