Hawaiʻi Island police have charged a Puna man and his son in connection with what started as a domestic abuse call at a park in Hawaiian Beaches in Pāhoa.

When Puna patrol officers responded to the area on Saturday night (August 10), the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Christopher Thomas Gonsalves of Pāhoa, struck and threatened an officer and then fled the scene.

Gonsalves was located and arrested Sunday and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Gonsalves was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree assaulting a police officer and abuse of a family/household member. His bail was set at $22,000.

In addition, detectives arrested 21-year-old Gordon A.E. Gonsalves of Pāhoa Tuesday morning and charged him at 1:30 p.m. with second-degree hindering prosecution for using force against an officer to allow his father to get away. His bail was set at $500.

Both men are being held at the cellblock pending their initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday (August 14).
