Puna Man Drowns While Swimming 12-09-01

MEDIA RELEASE

A 48-year-old man drowned Sunday (December 9, 2001) in waters off Kehena Beach in the Puna District.

The victim was identified as Danny Joe Carmack, of a Pahoa, Puna, address.

Responding to a 3:42 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers learned that the victim had been swimming in the area, near Kalapana, when he was struck by a large wave and thrown against the rocks. Witnesses said the victim then disappeared in the waves and later appeared lifeless.

Carmack was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m. Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
