MEDIA RELEASE

Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying individuals who are illegally trespassing on ranch land and damaging property to ride off-road motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles.

Kona police made the request after meeting with members of the Big Island Cattleman’s Association, officials of the Bishop Estate and private ranch owners earlier this month.

The meeting was held to address the property owners’ concerns about individuals cutting fence lines to access undeveloped properties in order to ride their vehicles.

Property managers and owners said they are concerned not only about trespass and property damage issues, but about the threat of soil erosion during heavy rains, bodily injuries and cattle escaping through broken fenced areas.

Anyone with information about the trespassing or those responsible for it are asked to call the community policing office at 323-2591.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
