Fourteen new officers have joined the ranks of the Hawaii County Police Department.

The 14 were members of the 56th Police Recruit Class, who graduated during luncheon ceremonies held at the Kilohana Room of the Hawaii Naniloa Resort.

They will now be assigned to veteran police officers around the Big Island and undergo another three and a half months of field training. After that, they will be assigned to various police districts around the island.

Wednesday’s graduates are Wendell C.K. Carter, Peter M. Fernandez, Garrett A. Hatada, Matthew K. Kaaihue, Apollo M. Kepo’o, Jesse J. Kerr, Iris M. McGuire, Nicolas Muna, James Pacheco, Robert W.H. Sakata, Viengsavanh Sivankeo, Dayton K. Tagaca, Sherwin W. Taka and Sandy I. Wakumoto.

Officers of the recruit class were McGuire, president; Pacheco, vice president; and Sakata, secretary-treasurer.

Sivankeo was named outstanding recruit; Kaaihue won the academic and physical fitness awards; Kerr earned the firearm award; and Sakata was recognized for keeping the best notebook.

Trainers for the graduating recruits were Sergeant Jay N. Enanoria and Officers Wayne Hisashima and Dexter Veriato.
