MEDIA RELEASE

A 52-year-old Hamakua man was killed Wednesday (July 24, 2002) in a traffic accident at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and the Four Seasons Resort in Kona.

The victim was identified as Andy Pascubillo of Kukuihaele.

Responding to a 5:10 a.m. call, Kona police determined that Pascubillo, a security guard, was driving a Kawasaki Mull all-terrain vehicle east, or mauka, across the highway when he was struck by a 1993 Toyota two-door sedan traveling north on the highway.

The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:57 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Eric Aoki, 21, of Kealakekua, was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 18 at the same time last year.
