Shooting Victim Identified 12-24-01

MEDIA RELEASE

Police have identified the 39-yer-old man who was shot by a Puna police officer on Saturday, December 22, 2001, at a dispute on Kupono Street in the Leilani Estates Subdivision of Puna.

The male has been identified as Santiago Vazquez, of 13-3441 Kupono Street, Pahoa, Hawaii. According to the autopsy results conducted today, Vazquez died of penetrating gunshot wound to the right chest. He also sustained a second non-fatal gunshot wound which penetrated his right chest and exited through his right arm.

Criminal Investigation Section detectives and Internal Affairs are continuing the investigation. The involved officer is on administrative leave in accordance with departmental procedures.
