MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged a 24-year-old man Thursday (August 10, 2000) with a variety of offenses resulting from the stabbing Sunday of three persons.

At 9:30 a.m., detectives charged Vincent Higa with attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, first-degree terroristic threatening, prohibited ownership of a firearm, prohibited ownership of ammunition, having no permit to acquire a firearm and failing to register a firearm.

Higa is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $71,000 bail.

At 1:30 p.m., Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives arrested Vincent Higa for attempted murder, reckless endangering and terroristic threatening. Higa was also charged with a parole violation.

Late Sunday, Higa got into a fight with Justin Young, 25, who was stabbed in the abdomen during the argument. Tony Young, 23, Justin’s brother, then tried to intervene, but was cut on his back. While attempting to stop the fight, Angela Young, 28, the suspect’s girlfriend and the Youngs’ sister, was stabbed in the upper right chest.

The three victims were taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where Tony Young was treated and released. Justin and Angela Young were hospitalized after undergoing surgery.
