MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A 31-year-old man was charged Friday afternoon (August 5, 2005) with a variety of felony offenses including attempted murder. The charges stem from a shooting incident that took place at a residence in Hilo on Wednesday (August 3, 2005).

The suspect was identified as Anthony Carvalho, of no permanent address in Hilo.

Carvalho was arrested Thursday afternoon (August 4, 2005) by members of the police departmentÕs Ice Task Force after they discovered him within a residence in Wainaku where they were serving a federal grand jury indictment on its resident for an unrelated case.

East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged Carvalho with second-degree attempted, first-degree burglary, four counts of violation of a court order, three counts of first-degree reckless endangering, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, ownership of a firearm prohibited and several other firearm offenses.

Pending an initial court appearance, Carvalho is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Responding to a 7:05 p.m. report Wednesday of a man firing a rifle within a Hilo residence, South Hilo patrol officers determined that Anthony Carvalho allegedly fired a shot into the ceiling of the home and pointed the firearm at one of the residents before leaving them physically unharmed.
