Media Release

A 66-year-old Pa’auilo man died Sunday (May 2) from injuries he sustained in a farm tractor crash in Pa’auilo Mauka in the Hāmākua District.

The victim was identified as Hamlet Barry of a Pa’auilo address.

Responding to a 7:42 p.m. call, Hāmākua patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a farm tractor on his property when it apparently flipped over, pinning him underneath.

The victim’s wife found him after he failed to return to the house.

Fire Department personnel extricated the victim and transported him to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Because this crash occurred on private property, it is not counted toward the island’s traffic fatality count.
