MEDIA RELEASE

A Suisan 18-wheel tractor-trailer truck ran off the road Wednesday (April 13, 2005) after its brakes partially failed while traveling down Hinalani Street in Kailua-Kona.

Responding to a 6:40 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the fully loaded truck was heading down Hinalani between Kamanu and Kalani Streets when the brakes partially went out. The truck then ran off the road and stopped without overturning.

Police attributed quick thinking by the driver in stopping the truck before it went through the busy Queen Kaahumanu intersection during the morning rush hour.

The driver of the truck, identified as Chucky Nunes, 29, of Keaau, Puna, was taken to the Kona Community Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

Police and State Transportation Department officials are investigating the accident.
