MEDIA RELEASE

Puna police are appealing to parents of elementary school children to send their kids to school on the bus to relieve traffic congestion near the new Keaau Elementary School.

During the first two days of the opening of the school, traffic along the Keaau-Pahoa highway was backed up for about 45 minutes, Puna Community Policing Officer Michael Leite said. The situation will get worse when Keaau High School reopens next Tuesday (January 11, 2000), Leite said.

Police said the traffic congestion is being caused by a lack of parking around the state’s new elementary school as well as the high volume of traffic trying to enter and leave the school.
