MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a 48-year-old Big Island man who was killed Thursday night (November 30, 2000) in a one-vehicle traffic accident on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) in the Mountain View area of the Puna District.

The victim was identified as Kelvin K. Rodrigues, 48, of Volcano.

Rodrigues was traveling south in his 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck about 0.3 miles south of the 18-mile marker when the truck crossed the centerline, ran off the left shoulder of the road and hit a utility pole.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m. Friday.

Thursday’s death was the 34th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 at the same time last year.
