MEDIA RELEASE

Police are investigating a burglary and suspicious fire that occurred over the weekend at Waiakea Intermediate school on Puainako Street in Hilo.

On Sunday (June 18, 2006) at about 8:15 a.m., South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the school campus after an employee discovered an apparent break-in at the school’s library. The suspect(s) also ignited a fire within the library but it apparently extinguished itself before spreading.

Following an inventory of the contents of the library, police learned that computer components were stolen.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations section assisted in the investigation and the collection of evidence.

The damage to the interior of the library and its contents was minimal. However, an estimate of the damages was unavailable.

Police have initiated investigations classified as burglary in the second degree and criminal property damage in the second degree.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Detective Greg Esteban of the Area I Criminal Investigations Section at 961-2384.
