MEDIA RELEASE

Police are renewing their appeal to the public for help in identifying whoever was responsible for a burglary and suspicious fire in June at Waiakea Intermediate school on Puainako Street in Hilo.

South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the school campus at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, June 18, 2006, after an employee discovered an apparent break-in at the library. One or more suspects also set a fire in the library but it apparently extinguished itself before spreading.

Following inventory of the library’s contents, police learned that a trophy was stolen. It was later recovered at a different location on campus.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations section assisted in the investigation and the collection of evidence.

The damage to the interior of the library and its contents was estimated at $4,500.

Police initiated burglary and criminal property damage investigations.

Police ask anyone with information about the case to call Detective Greg Esteban of the Area I Criminal Investigations Section at 961-2384 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in East Hawaii or 329-8181 in West Hawaii. Calls to Crime Stoppers are kept confidential and are not recorded.
