A Hilo man has been charged with eight offenses after trying to return some items that had been purchased with a stolen credit card.

On April 1, a purse belonging to a 26-year-old Hilo woman was stolen from a vehicle parked in downtown Hilo. The woman’s credit card was used twice the next day at a store in Hilo. Each transaction exceeded $1,000.

On Monday (April 6), 25-year-old Chad Wright of Hilo tried to return $900 worth of the items purchased April 2. Police investigation revealed that he was the same person who bought them. He was arrested and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

On Tuesday (April 7) detectives charged Wright with two counts each of fraud, ID theft, forgery and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $19,000.

He remained at the cellblock until his initial court appearance on Wednesday (April 8).
