MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island Police have arrested a 48-year-old Puna man for a shooting in the Kalapana Blacksands Subdivision on Sunday evening (May 28, 2006).

Puna Police responded to the subdivision around 7:15 p.m. Sunday when a 43-year-old man reported that the suspect threw a large rock through a window at the victim’s home before fleeing the area.

Police learned that the victim went to the suspect’s home to confront him about the damaged window. The suspect then allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim, who fled the area.

Police also learned that later the same evening the suspect returned to the victim’s home and allegedly discharged a firearm several times, damaging the victim’s vehicle before driving away from the area. The victim was not injured in the shooting.

On Monday (May 29, 2006) the Hawaii Police Department’s Special Response Team (S.R.T.), a tactical unit, was activated and responded to the area of the suspect’s home after determining that he was likely armed with a weapon and may have barricaded himself inside. A police negotiator established contact with the suspect and the man surrendered without incident. Paul Leon Olson was arrested at about 5:40 a.m. Monday on suspicion of criminal property damage, reckless endangering and terroristic threatening.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section have assumed the investigation. A search warrant was executed at Olson’s home and police recovered a firearm.

Olson remains in police custody at the Hilo Police cellblock pending further investigation and charging decisions.
