BOBBY L. MACOMBER
…charged in Honaunau home invasion

MEDIA RELEASE

Police have arrested and charged a 37-year-old suspect with a variety of offenses in connection with a home invasion that occurred September 10, 2003, in Honaunau, South Kona.

Responding to a 9 a.m. call Monday (October 6, 2003), Kona patrol officers arrested the suspect, identified as Bobby L. Macomber Jr., of a Lihau Street address in Kaloko, North Kona, for terroristic threatening after learning he had threatened a 53-year-old man.

The victim told police that he and Macomber had gotten into a dispute over the disposal of cat food, when Macomber displayed a revolver and threatened to shoot him in the head.

The patrol officers called West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives, who by coincidence were in the process of obtaining a search warrant for Macomber’s residence in connection with the Honaunau home invasion.

CIS detectives then executed a search warrant on Macomber’s residence and vehicle and recovered a loaded stainless steel .357 Smith and Wesson revolver, several rounds of ammunition for the revolver and a shotgun. They also recovered a Hawaii County police retirement badge that was later discovered to have been used in the Honaunau home invasion and residue of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice,” inside small plastic zip lock baggies typically used to store illegal drugs.

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, detectives charged Macomber with first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, kidnapping, having an illegal place to keep a weapon, second-degree theft, impersonating a police officer, three counts of ownership of a prohibited weapon, violation of a court order, first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and two counts of illegal possession of drug paraphernalia.

Macomber is being held at the Kona police station in lieu of $241,000 bail.

Most of the charges against Macomber stemmed from the September 10, 2003, home invasion. In that incident, two armed men identifying themselves as police officers forced their way into the home, overpowered the victim, forced him to the ground and tied him up with duct tape. They then searched the home, stole cash and valuables and escaped on foot.

Police are still looking for a second suspect in that case as well as for two suspects who were involved in a second, unrelated home invasion that took place on September 18, 2003, in Captain Cook.
