MEDIA RELEASE

A 13-year-old Ka’u boy died Thursday morning (August 17, 2006) when his all-terrain vehicle crashed into another ATV.

Responding to an 8:15 a.m. report of a crash at the intersection of Wakea Avenue and Kahiki Street in the Discovery Harbour Subdivision, police found the boy lying on the road with severe head injuries.

Investigation revealed that two ATVs were headed north on Kahiki Street in the direction of Wakea Avenue when the victim’s ATV ran into the ATV in front of his. The force of the collision ejected the victim onto Kahiki Street.

He was identified as Kamanuwai Waiwaiole, 13, of Waiohinu.

Waiwaiole was taken to Ka’u Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10 a.m.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet. Police believe speed played a factor in the crash.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing the investigation.
