During the week of August 15-August 21, 2006, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been a total of 771 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 637 during the same period last year, an increase of 21 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been a revised total of 1,640 major accidents so far this year compared with a total of 1,530 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There have been a total of 25 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 22 for the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
