MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of February 12-18, 2001, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 135 DUI arrests, a 29 percent decrease from the 189 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 304 major accidents so far this year, compared to 291 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.
