Police have arrested a 16-year-old male suspect wanted for murder in the death of another male whose body was found Sunday (February 18, 2001) near the Keaau Underpass in Puna.

Officers arrested the suspect shortly after 4 p.m. Monday after he eluded guards at the Hilo International Airport who had tried to apprehend him after they were alerted that he might try to leave the Big Island.

After searching for the suspect, police officers arrested him in a brush area near the airport parking lot.

The suspect, whose name cannot be released because he is a juvenile, is being held in secure detention pending further investigation.

Also on Monday, Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives identified the 20-year-old male victim through fingerprints. They are working through the Japanese Consulate in Honolulu to notify his relatives and will release his name as soon as his next of kin are notified.

Puna patrol officers had found the victim’s body on the shoulder of the road near the Keaau Underpass after responding to a 6:42 a.m. call on Sunday.
