During the week of March 5-11, 2001, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 187 DUI arrests, a 26 percent decrease from the 251 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 437 major accidents so far this year, compared to 415 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven during the same period last year, a decrease of 71 percent.
