During the week of July 3-9, 2000, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and five were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 638 DUI arrests, a 5 percent decrease from the 674 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 40 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,111, compared to 1,124 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.2 percent.
There have been 20 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 43 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 20 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one, or 0.5 percent, has been confirmed as being drug-related.
