MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Puna police have identified a man who apparently drowned Tuesday evening (July 4, 2000) as Irvil Donald Phelps Jr., 57, of the Puna subdivision of Ainaloa.

Phelps, whose name was withheld until Friday pending notification of next of kin, was fishing with a friend when he fell off a cliff into waters off Hawaiian Paradise Park in Puna and apparently drowned.

A fire rescue helicopter recovered Phelps’ body and flew it to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The results an autopsy ordered to determine the exact cause of death have not been completed.
