During the week of August 14-20, 2000, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 797 DUI arrests, an increase of 3 percent over the 774 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 48 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,374, compared to 1,353 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.

There have been 26 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 during the same period last year, an increase of 37 percent.

Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 19 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
