MEDIA RELEASE

Two masked men broke into a Kanoelani Street home in Hilo early Monday (August 4, 2003) and terrorized its occupants — a 93-year-old man and his 89-year-old wife — before leaving with jewelry and cash.

Responding to a 3 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determine that two burglars, described as local males, entered the home through a window and started going through the house.

They eventually got to the master bedroom, where they found the elderly couple. One of the males brandished what was described as a handgun, and they tied up the husband. Before leaving, the two stole jewelry and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The burglar who brandished what is believed to be a handgun was described as being 5-foot-9 or 5-foot-10 in height with a heavy build and having black wavy hair and perhaps a beard. His accomplice was described as being 5-foot-7 in height, weighing 140 to 150 pounds and having unknown colored hair and eyes.

Anyone with information about the burglary or the identity of the suspects is asked to call Detective Lucille Melemai of the East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2377 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300. All Crime Stoppers information is kept strictly confidential.
