MEDIA RELEASE

Police are reminding Hilo motorists that starting Thursday (April 26, 2001), Waianuenue Avenue will return to its morning one-way traffic pattern during school days.

The one-way makai pattern will be in effect from 7:15 to 8 a.m. Mondays through Fridays when school is in session, then revert to the usual two-way pattern after school convenes, said Sergeant Randy Apele of the Police Department’s Traffic Services Section.

During the same hours, a one-way traffic pattern in the Puna direction will be in effect on Kapiolani Street between Waianuenue Avenue and Haili Street, Apele said.

The one-way traffic patterns are designed to alleviate traffic congestion caused by parents dropping their children off at school.

The one-way traffic flows had been suspended during the 19-day strike by public school teachers.
