Police Arrest Nine in Crackdown on Underage, Public Drinking 04-24-01

MEDIA RELEASE

Nine persons were arrested for 15 liquor law offenses and seven other offenses Friday and Saturday nights (April 20 and 21, 2001) in a crackdown on underage and public drinking in Hilo.

A special crime reduction unit comprised of Juvenile Aid, Traffic and Patrol officers arrested three adults under the age of 21 and four juveniles on 14 counts of drinking offenses and five litter offenses.

In addition, one adult over the age of 21 was arrested for a drinking violation and another adult was arrested for two outstanding bench warrants.

Officers assigned to the crime reduction unit made the arrests during a sweeps of the Banyan Drive and Wailoa State Park areas.

The sweep was part of an ongoing operation to apprehend potential underage drunk drivers before they get behind the wheel of a car.

The special crime reduction units will continue to enforce underage and public drinking violations throughout the year.
