MEDIA RELEASE

Hilo Criminal Investigations Section detectives are working with a fire inspector from the Hawaii County Fire Department to investigate the cause of a suspicious early-morning fire at Waiakea High School on Tuesday (April 11, 2006).

No one was injured in the fire.

When police responded at 1:15 to a report of the fire, they found a large amount of smoke coming from the administration building and flames burning inside.

Firefighters arrived soon thereafter to battle the flames.

Detectives and the fire inspector determined that the fire originated in the administration building, also called “Building A.” They were unable immediately to determine its cause.

Police have initiated a criminal property damage case and are continuing the investigation.

Although the amount of damages has not been determined, Captain Chadwick Fukui described it as “substantial” and asked for the public’s help in determining what happened.

“Incidents like these hurt not only the school but also the students and the community as a whole, “Fukui said.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Detective Tom Poy at 961-2383 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
