MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of April 4-April 10, 2006, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been a total of 321 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 253 during the same period last year, an increase of 27 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 713 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 669 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There has been a total of 13 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 11 for the same period last year, an increaase of 18 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
