Media Release (update)

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Sections in Kona and Hilo are continuing to investigate a shooting in Ka’u.

The victim, a 23-year-old Kurtistown woman, was reportedly abducted from her home by three people about a week ago. Police believe she was beaten, kidnapped and taken to a remote area in Waiohinu, where she was shot multiple times.

The victim was disoriented and unsure of her location. She remained in the area until Friday before Department of Water Supply employees working in the watershed area of Waiohinu discovered her walking on an unimproved jeep trail. The Water Supply workers notified authorities and drove the victim to a rescue staging area. A Fire Department helicopter took her to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition. Her condition was later upgraded to serious.

Detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section have classified the case as an attempted murder. They have ruled out domestic violence as a motive. The suspect is known to the victim.

Police ask anyone with information about the case to call Detective Regino Saludares at 326-4646, extension 227, or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo.  All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
