A Hilo man faces three felony charges in connection with a reported threatening incident early New Year’s Day.

At 1:40 a.m. Thursday (January 1) South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the 800 block of Kaiwiki Road in Hilo. There, it was reported that 53-year-old John Gouveia had brandished a hunting knife and attempted to stab a 43-year-old Hilo man. He then reportedly attempted to run into the victim with a sports-utility vehicle.

When two neighbors, a 28-year-old man and a 35-year-old man, went to investigate, the suspect reportedly tried to hit them with the SUV.

Police arrested Gouveia a short time later off Wainaku Street. He was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

At 6:10 p.m. Friday, Gouveia was charged with three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $30,000. He remained in the cellblock pending his initial court appearance on Monday (January 5).
