The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Officer Bradden Kimura as “Officer of the Month” for February in a luncheon ceremony Wednesday (February 4) at Huggo’s restaurant in Kailua-Kona.

Kimura was honored for his quick action and compassion while attempting to resuscitate a person who had attempted suicide.

On the morning of July 2, Kimura and Officer Kaea Sugata responded to a report of a possible suicide in Kailua-Kona.

When they arrived at the scene, a woman was performing chest compressions on an unresponsive man in an apartment unit. Officer Kimura immediately began rescue breathing while Officer Sugata took over chest compressions. They continued until medics arrived about five minutes later.

Sergeant Mekia Rose noted that police officers receive training in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation annually but added that medics usually arrive at the scene first to provide medical services. “Officer Kimura is a seasoned officer with the Hawaiʻi Police Department who consistently demonstrates the kind of character, compassion and decisiveness expected from each and every police officer in the department,” Rose wrote in nomination papers.

As “Officer of the Month,” Kimura is eligible to become “Officer of the Year.”

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee is an organization that encourages community involvement in aiding and supporting police in West Hawaiʻi.
